Maverick and his Blankey
I’ve had this post rolling around in my head for a few weeks now, I just haven’t been able to write it.
Maybe because writing it means it’s real. It’s actually happening.
This morning The Cowboy and I are getting on a plane with Maverick. Not Maverick and Merlin; just Maverick. He’s going to live with my dad in Kelowna.
Just now, writing that, makes it real. No more this is an idea or it’s just pretend it’s real and it hurts.

A few weeks after we brought Maverick home (abandoned by his mama and less than 2 pounds) The Cowboy started letting him in bed with us. I had planned to keep him in the bathroom (his initial home) for a while, but The Cowboy wanted to let teeny tiny Maverick in our bed. I didn’t take much convincing.
He was on my side of the bed and started kneading and licking our blanket. And he kept kneading and licking and kneading and licking and purring. Oh, the purring.
Right away, the blanket became Maverick’s lovey.
Even now, 8 months later (aside: if it’s this hard to say “so long” to a cat I cannot imagine how difficult it will be to say to a child) the blanket is still his lovey.
If he sees me sitting on the couch under the blanket, he hops up with a, “Merow” and settles in on the blanket.
At bed time, I put the blanket on the bed and he curls up at the foot of the bed until my alarm goes off; then he moves to give me (and the blanket) a cuddle before getting up for the day.

I’ve spent much of the three weeks since making this decision feeling like a terrible pet owner. There have been so, so many tears.
Especially when I found this picture from the day we brought him home.
Every time Maverick and Merlin play together I can’t help but think I’m doing a terrible thing and they’re going to be heartbroken over it. Merlin hasn’t known a life without Maverick (I don’t count the 8 weeks before we got him) and Maverick and Merlin have been buds since day 4 (it took them a while to fall in kitty cat love).
I know my dad with love on him, and I know we’ll love on Merlin, I just feel rotten for splitting up best buds. Maybe I’ll have some luck teaching Merlin to fetch?

I wanted to let them play
Good Sunday morning!
Happy last day of the Olympics! Will you be watching the closing ceremonies? Are you pumped for the Spice Girls!?
I have a story for y’all this morning.
Yesterday we had a condo showing (yay!!) while I was marking exams and The Cowboy was planning on going shooting with his buddies. Normally in this situation we’d just leave the kitties loose in the condo, but The Cowboy decided he wanted them out. Since we were both going to be gone for so long we really couldn’t leave them in their crate, so he took them to his shop.
To his 2400 sq ft shop filled with nooks and crannies for kitties to hide.
I finished my marking around 8pm, came home and waited for The Cowboy. When he wasn’t home by 10pm I arranged to pick up the spare key and headed to the shop.
After 15 minutes of searching, I found this guy
I think he was happy to see me.
I continued to search for Merlin for 45 minutes until The Cowboy turned up, then we looked for another hour. Finally at 12:30 I needed to go to bed and we decided we’d look in the morning.
The Cowboy woke himself up at 8 (after going to bed at 2!) to look for Merlin.
When he got to the shop he saw this
He looks pleased doesn’t he?!
The Cowboy managed to catch him, but he got scared and broke out of the box. He’s hiding somewhere………The Cowboy has been waiting an hour for Merlin to come out of hiding…no luck.
But the dog-cat? He’s been by my side all morning. Hopefully Merlin will let us catch him this afternoon. Silly, silly cat.

Moar Kitties
Lately the ole blog has been sorely lacking in the kitteh department.
Now that the kittens have kind of learned how to sleep (except when we want to sleep!) it’s easier for me to take pictures of them.
When did they get so big?!?!

The Cat Decision
All-in-all, The Cowboy and I are super pumped about our decision to purchase our kitteh before Christmas.
He’s an awesome, affectionate guy, and even non-cat people seem to like him!
However, since we acquired him so young (at 7 weeks) he’s also pretty needy. Until we got him he lived with his siblings as his mom wasn’t anywhere to be found – so he was used to having friends and playmates. Unfortunately, The Cowboy and I work a lot, especially now since I’m working 12+ hour days and have been out of town this past week.
It’s become pretty evident that our little guy could really use a friend to help tire him out during the day so he can let us sleep at night!
We’re tried playing with him lots when we’re home – The Cowboy even taught him to fetch this week (he showed me via FaceTime last night, it’s adorable!) but it just doesn’t tire him out and come 2am, when you really want to sleep, it can be a pain.
We’ve talked at length this week about whether or not its the best decision for us to a) whether the storm with Maverick or b) find a buddy for him.
The Cowboy has been the most resistant to this decision as he’s never had cats before – he thinks it’ll be twice as bad, whereas I think it’ll help.
We’ve made some calls and are going to meet some kitteh’s this weekend and will hopefully bring home a new family member at some point this weekend!
…..I’m slowly turning into the crazy cat lady!

This blog is now all about my cat
Okay.
Not really.
But expect to see quite a few kitten pictures being posted in the next few days
The Cowboy agreed to go pay a visit to some kittens to see how he did (plus, all family members have to be present in order to adopt) and his allergies didn’t bug him even a teeny bit!
YAY!
We’re trying to keep him in our bathroom/bedroom as much as possible until he settles in and to minimize the about of cat hair in the house until after the IL’s leave. I’m not even allowed to post him on Facebook until the IL’s leave because we want to keep it as quiet as possible.
He was given the name Ernest when he came in (abandoned by his mom), but The Cowboy and I decided to change it. After tossing some lame names back and forth (Blackie) we settled on Maverick – yes, it was inspired by Top Gun
He purrs on the entire time he eats…..
…and sleeps
I may have also convinced The Cowboy to let him sleep in bed with us. Maybe……
