Acceptance
The other evening I was having a conversation with The Cowboy about my weight. We were talking about how it doesn’t matter much (or little) I eat or how much (or little) I work out, but weight seems to stay the same.
A good friend of ours recently lost 25 pounds over the course of a about 5 months, simply by tracking her food, going to yoga and working out on the elliptical a few days a week.
I know that would not work for me.
It hasn’t in the past.
I have tracked every single bit of food that’s gone into my mouth for 3 months straight and only managed to “lose” 3 pounds. The lowest weight I’ve been in the past 2 years is 137 pounds. Right now I’m comfortably hovering around 141 pounds.
It doesn’t seem to matter too much what I do.
Sure, if I eat a lot of wine and cheese I’ll hang out around 142 pounds, but once I limit that and start running again, it doesn’t take much to get me to 138 pounds.
Getting any lower than 138 pounds?
A near impossibility.
Sometimes I’m not even sure if it’s worth it.
Is cutting out all wine, cheese and treats really worth a clothing size?!
Sure, I could do it. I’m already biking 20km a day in addition to training for my half marathon so dropping weight shouldn’t be difficult.
It is.
So I’ve been exploring the idea of a set weight.
A number of people I’ve spoken to have said they weighed more in their late 20′s and early 30′s and easily dropped the weight towards the end of their 30′s as their fertility dropped off.
(I realize this is contrary to a lot of studies about women and metabolism)
I think this might be true for me.
Now, this isn’t an excuse to eat all the crap that I want because my weight likely won’t change, but it is probable that this is the way my body works, and, also how my mom’s worked.
At 54 my mom now weighs the same as she did in high school. However, up until about 7 years ago she weighed more and easily dropped 15 pounds when she upped her exercise and cut down on eating junk.
Obviously I am going to cut down the junk, but I’m also going to accept that maybe my body is happy where is it right now and I won’t be a slave to the scale.
I am going to continue to weigh myself on a regular basis (mainly because I find it interesting to see what my cause my weight to fluctuate up or down on any given day) and track my exercise to stay healthy.
What are your thoughts on a “set point” for weight?
Do you struggle with losing weight very slowly?

Confession: I kind of feel like an asshole for talking about weight and wanting to lose weight, when I’m a size 6/8 and am no way fat. Not even close. But Brianne commented on this post about feeling gross. And….that’s exactly it. As a competitive swimmer for 12 years I was always a 2/4 without trying. I was used to that size. It was normal for me. So now, to be a bigger size, it’s a hard pill to swallow. Do I need to lose weight? No. But I sure as heck would like to be a bit tighter.

Weekly Wears
Monday
4, maybe 5 hours of sleep.
Board Committee meeting at 8am meant I had to look presentable on the limited amount of sleep.
Too much wine and cheese meant my blazer was a leetle bit tight, don’t mind my food baby.
Blazer – Dynamite
Top – Express
Capris – Dynamite
Shoes – Calvin Klein
Tuesday
Much more sleep for Tuesday – and a package of 3 dresses from HauteLook made Tuesday easy
I’m amazed at how big a difference wearing a bra makes. I tried on the dresses sans-bra on Monday night, but with a bra?! Look ma! BOOBS!
Question: The Cowboy and I are going to a wedding in September and I think this is a perfect “garden party” style dress. It is too white to wear to the ceremony? I think I’ll change into something more cocktail for the reception
Dress – Jonathan Martin Dresses (purchased from HauteLook)
Cardigan – Dynamte
Shoes – Dolche Vita
Wednesday
I was so upset when I got to work and realized I had left my phone at home
Then The Cowboy was going to bring it, then he wasn’t, then he was going to be late, then he couldn’t find it. In the end – no phone for me.
I did remember to take pictures after coming home at 11pm on Wednesday after a night out with friends. It’s…..kind of similar to what I wore to work, so it’ll have to do.
I threw it together on Tuesday night when I was cleaning so I wasn’t totally sure if it would be a success, I think it was!
Tank – Dynamite
Sweater – Banana Republic
Skirt – Jacob
Shoes – Dolche Vita
Friday
If you’re wondering about Thursday’s outfit, it was very similar to this
Hooray for Friday!
I figured out a new way to curl my hair without heat (seriously!) and I’m loving it. It went a bit too curly today, but that’s okay.
I can’t believe I only have one week left of work before starting the new job.
I’m pumped.
Top – Express
Sweater – Banana Republic
Jeans – Moto
