Lent Day 1

Lent Day 1

I really struggled with finding a beautiful picture today. Not because Calgary isn’t beautiful, it is, but because a selfish family member put The Cowboy in an impossible position (bringing unsavory people to our condo and requesting money) and I’m mad about it.

I’m mad that I can let my day get derailed by this (hello cookies!) and I’m mad that this family member is just so friggin’ selfish that he actually thought this was okay. And really, we didn’t have to means to do this, but we did. So I am mad.

But, Lent isn’t about me being mad or angry or resentful.

It’s about forgiveness and beauty.

And so, I present to you beautiful picture #1

HIP_321408134.121285

Y’all were expecting a picture of a cookie, weren’t you?!

Tricia – I hope you don’t think I’m a terrible, horrible, no good person for borrowing your idea.

On Lent

On Lent

Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. We skip Sundays when we count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. Lent begins on 9 March 2011 and ends on 23 April 2011, which is the day before Easter.

I don’t talk a whole lot about what I believe on here.

I guess there are a number of reasons.

My faith is close to me and it’s mine, and I don’t think it’s always appropriate to yell out, “Hey! Look at me! Look what I believe!”

I think that would be in bad taste.

I also don’t want to be seen as “preachy” because that is not what I am or who I am.

I am me. I will trust you for longer than I should after you’ve hurt me. I will always give the benefit of the doubt to the point of getting hurt. I will forgive when I shouldn’t.

The Cowboy and I have never done anything for Lent. We go to a non-denominational (that always makes me laugh. We’re the non-denominational denomination) Protestant church and Lent isn’t really observed or celebrated by Protestants. At least, not in any of the churches I’ve (very sporadically) attended.

I have thought a lot about doing something for Lent and after reading this thread in the Community (specifically, Tricia’s response) I’m considering doing the same. Taking 1 picture ever day of something beautiful.

I thought long and hard about removing something from my life:

  • Coffee
  • Sugar
  • Alcohol
  • Facebook
  • Computer time
  • TV time
  • etc

But as I thought about it, I realized I need more discipline.

Sometimes I just need to do instead of talking and thinking about doing.

I realize at sometimes finding the time to take a picture, edit and post it may be cumbersome, but I also think it’s really important to step back and take a look at the beauty in the world.

I am also going to try and include some Colour Stories pictures on there as well. The colour for March is daffodil (this may prove challenging what with all the snow on the ground) and April is grass (I sure hope we see grass in April!)

I’m undecided if I’m going to post my pictures here, or just on our (failed) picture a day site. I suppose I should decide by tonight.

What about you?

Would you prefer 2 posts a day? One regular post and 1 picture post? Or would you rather click over to the picture site?

(If The Cowboy follows through on his pictures, I maybe post them here as well. I’ll see)
